Due to lack of processing and superior freshness, an unrefined base oil - with the exception of jojoba, extra-virgin olive oil and coconut oil - has a short life shelf and tends to become rancid if stored at room temperature for more than six to eight months, specially in the warm weather. These oils should be refrigerated and used within one year. You can keep your facial oils, moisturizers, and balms at room temperature if you plan on using it daily and using it up within 3 to 5 months.
If you are taking a break from using a particular product, for example saving it for a different season (like our Surf Balm, After-sun Healing Balm), keep it in the refrigerator (for up to 3–4 months) until you are ready to start using it again.
In general, storing your balms and salves in the fridge help to preserve the consistency and healing properties of the oils and essential oils used in the formulas, specially if you live in warm weather climates. It is my personal choice, except for the lip balms that I use daily. Close the lid tightly after each use.
